Memoir

This second volume of autobiography is a detailed and insightful account of the author’s beginnings in the world of 1960s high finance, and his baptism of fire as the protégé of the Lebanese Palestinian banker, Yusif Bedas. Bedas’s mecurial career as head of Intra Bank forms the centrepiece of the narrative, and Naim’s closeness to him gives the story a special immediacy. The fall of Bedas and the collapse of Intra are meticulously described, together with Naim’s efforts to salvage what could be saved from the wreckage. The book also recounts the planting of the seeds which grew into his later successes as group chief executive of Asprey’s, and founder of a mini-conglomerate in publishing and the arts. It conveys the heady early days as Naim operated as an independent out of his first office in Jermyn Street. Not only does In Touch With His Roots cast light on a remarkable story, it is also a gripping portrayal of the murky waters of banking and politics.
